CONSULTATION FAQs

What does a consultation look like?

  1. I send a pre-consultation email with just a few questions so I have a sense of current struggles and hopes for our time together.

  2. We begin the consultation just talking about what's hard, if there seem to be any patterns, any ideas about where behaviors might be coming from,  etc.

  3. We work together to come up with 1-3 experiments to try to shift the dynamic causing the struggle.

  4. I create a post-consultation recap email with the experiment plan plus links and resources about things that came up during our consult time. You're welcome to email me back if anything comes up or is confusing or if the experiment fails right out of the box.

  5. I send a follow-up email one week after the initial consultation to ask about how things are going and offer ideas for little tweaks or shifts that might be useful and a final email 2 weeks after the initial consultation to answer any last questions.

How do I book a consultation?

  • I am currently booking consultations 9am-4pm Monday-Friday.  Evening or weekend hours may be available and I can also refer to other consultants who have more availability.

What's your background?

I am a Certified Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor, Founder of Birth Roots Center for Community Supported Parenting and Co-Creator of Facilitating Community facilitation approach. All of these approaches start by recognizing that every parent and child is good and doing the best they can with the resources they have and that off-track behaviors are always a symptom of something - we work on healing that root cause.

My focus is on the emotional system and how clearing emotional hurts, tensions, and fears can shift reactions and behaviors (for both parents and children).  I help families look at the big/whole picture and create realistic plans for boosting connection and cultivating cooperation. I have a deep faith in the power of connection in creating strong life-long relationships and healing hurts.

What are your limitations?

I have 20+ years experience supporting parents, consider myself a lifelong learner and have confidence that these tools can help any family no matter the situation but I do have limitations. My sessions are non-clinical and focus mostly on the topics you can find on the Hand in Hand Parenting website.

While consultation sessions can dovetail beautifully with most treatment plans, they should not replace medical or clinical support for significant clinical or psychiatric concerns. I do not diagnose (including Autism, ADHD, sensory issues, etc) but can support you in making emotional support plans for yourself and in adapting these Tools to meet your child where they are and as they are. We will think together about how those issues may be factoring in to behaviors and difficulties and the environmental/contextual things that may be exacerbating them.

I cannot advise parents on issues such as teen drug addiction, teen eating disorders, self-harming, diagnosis of severe psychiatric disorder in children, child abuse, child sexual abuse, sexual assault, and/or allegations of abuse or assault.

I am not a therapist and do not offer couples counseling. Many parents attend consultations together and we can work on things that keep parent to child relationships at the center. I am not trained to mediate or support parent-to-parent difficulties when there are significant differences of opinion about how to respond to a parenting situation.
